Last week I met a man named Billy. He is homeless and had just been discharged from hospital after suffering from pneumonia. I asked Billy if he'd like a snow boarding jacket to keep him warm. "Oh my god, that would be amazing!"
I handed Billy the Jacket and watched as his expression changed from a frown to smile.
"What does it mean to be warm during winter when you're on the streets mate?"
"It's literally the difference between life and death. This is amazing, thanks so much."
This story actually starts in August last year...
Another cold winter was coming to an end, thank god. Everyday I'd get rugged up in my warmest clothes and head into the city and everyday I'd see the homeless trying to stay warm as well. It's actually heartbreaking to think about them spending such cold nights sleeping on the streets.
I woke one morning to an email from a guy named Alan. He works for a company named XTM who are based in Torquay. He had seen the Humans In Melbourne page and wanted to know if I'd help with a campaign they were about to embark on... After I heard what they wanted to do, I had to say yes!
He told me they wanted to get as many old snow jackets out of people's cupboards as they could. They wanted to give these jackets to the homeless to make sure they would be warm during winter.
The team from XTM also contacted the stores who sell their gear and asked if they wanted to be involved. Many said yes.
Last week myself and Alan visited Dave from Auski in the city and they had decided to donate 8 boxes of snow gear! #legends
After working out all the logistics I am very proud to say that this is the start of the campaign named Heat The Homeless! (Link below)
If you have any old or unused snow gear laying about you can drop it off to stores (you can find these in the link below) where it will be sent for sorting and distributed to those who need it most this winter.
Massive thanks to Anonymous X, a local charity, who will be sorting and distributing the gear.
I couldn't be more proud to be a part of this. As a famous T.V show tells us, "Winter is coming". Let's try and make it as comfortable as possible for those who will feel it the most.
This picture came up on my Facebook memories. I look at it now with such different eyes.. When I was handed this and informed that I was having twins, I thought what the fuck else could go wrong? I've fucked my marriage, I'v fallen pregnant, I've gained 10 kilos in the first 6 weeks and now this.. I'm feeling my weakest and I need to be my strongest. Twins. Bill and I were off.. Then on.. Then off again. I looked at this picture with fear and resentment, fear of raising 4 kids on my own, resenting these 2 uninvited guests, squatting in my tummy waiting to be born into the dark cloud that my life was becoming. I get pre natal depression. It doesn't matter how many times you tell me where the light is, I can't find it. People think that depressed people 'look for' reasons to be depressed, in actual fact they look for reasons not to be, they look everywhere but just can't find them. Seeing this picture the other day overwhelmed me with joy, that's my fucking crew in there! If only I could grab that scared pregnant women and tell her, explain to her that no matter how lonely this picture makes you feel, it is the exact opposite. This picture? These little belly slugs? This little dance party in your womb? This is the end of your loneliness. This will fill you up with everything you need. And no matter how dark you feel, how blind you are to the light. It's there, it's shining brighter then ever and you will see it again. Now, I look at this picture through different eyes. Eyes that have found that light again. And I can't explain the love.
If you are having a crap day .. stop and watch this .... if your not then this will make your day even better...Classic Hoges.... Can some one please kill political correctness.... if this played today, it would melt down CH 9 switchboard and be a crucified on Q&A ! We all need to laugh more
Here's the thing. Speaking to you guys, I’m constantly reminded that while we might be a nation of pet lovers, our cities aren’t exactly pet friendly.
And to me, that doesn’t seem right…or fair. After all, our pets provide so many benefits on a physical, mental and emotional level.
So…I want to change this. I’ve written an open letter to kick start a campaign to #keepauspetfriendly and hopefully turn this around. See it in full at www.petpositives.com.au/blog and let me know what you think.
Lock your car doors when you're stopped at traffic lights. A big group of Sudanese guys just tried to jack my car when I was stopped at the lights. Thank god I'm fine. Gunned the red light and got the fuck out of there. A bit shaken up but I'll survive. Just thought it would be a good idea to warn everyone out there... Please be aware this is happening all over Melbourne!
Gas bubbling through the Nepean River at Douglas Park, Western Sydney. AGL operate coal seam gas wells nearby, and long-wall coal mining also occurs nearby... I was sent this video from some people who were fishing from kayaks on the river.
