9news started a debate on afternoon News about the Southern Cross Tattoo and I'd like to set a few things straight. No, it's NOT Racist to have a tattoo of the southern cross nor is it racist to be proud of your country, many service men and women, tradies and even a few white collar blokes have the southern cross tattooed close to their heart because they have pride in their country, their people or themselves and i'll be damned if i let 9news make a joke of something that had no reason to even be debated. We as Australians have the right to be Proud just like every other culture has the right to celebrate their history and traditions so do we...
I have big news. I’m pregnant! No seriously, today we clicked over the $3 million raised! I thought we were done when I finished that silly unicycling endeavour. I wanted it over, to be honest. But you told me loud and clear that it’s over when mums and kids stop dying from cancer. Couldn’t argue with that so we pushed on. Now I do nothing but village business and wouldn’t have it any other way.
Thanks for letting us all in, Con. Who knows, you might just be here when we hit the $10M! Fingers crossed.
This is the story of a little library in Melbourne that makes a lot of lives better everyday. But you may never have heard of it...
In Melbourne Central, on Level 2, you'll almost pass without noticing, The Little Library. Inside you'll see what looks like a bookstore, but it is so much more. The Little Library is a place where absolutely anyone can come and borrow or swap a book for free. There is no membership, there is no shopkeeper or security guard, it is all done on honesty, exactly as it should be.
Today when I stopped in I was lucky enough to meet Herb. I asked him why he came to The Little Library.
"I love it here. It gives you that feeling of home and belonging. Being homeless can be lonely at times and reading really helps with that. I come to sit and read and relax. I feel safe here. I charge my phone while I read as well which is fantastic. I take a book to read and bring them back when I'm done.
"Lately my favourite books have been from Clive Cussler. I've been hooked with the suspense! It's a bit hard to read at night at the moment, my hands get so cold. But it's great to know when I warm up in the morning that Clive will be waiting for me."
Mitch and Ben from Brisbane were also in the library looking as amazed as I did. Mitch summed it up pretty well, "This is brilliant. It is just SO MELBOURNE!".
This amazing little library is for everyone. Students, travellers, you and I. I will be dropping off and picking up a couple of books tomorrow. I encourage everyone to do the same when they can.
Just when I think I've heard all the brilliant things about Melbourne...
I wasn't going to write anything about the boy in the Gorilla enclosure saga, there is just so many angry heads over the whole thing and I didn't want to dip myself into that kind of tension... Then I saw the video footage.. And I realised that I really did have something to say. 💗👑
Billie-Violet is a glass half empty kind of kid. After a day of swimming, playing and socialising she's likely to come out with a sentence like "my life is the worst" because it wasn't finished off with a sleepover or some new piece of insignificant shit from the toy isle at the supermarket that was probably made by some kid who's life really is the worst. #notbuyingit I have been patient, I tell her that I think her life totally rules, that I think she's a legend, that I hear her laughing all day long because she's having so much fun.. But it's usually met with, "it didn't feel fun, Arlo ruined my hair and the twins stuffed up my Lego Zoo" I hold back, of course on the inside I'm all "It's Lego!!! Try being covered in 2 different flavours of baby spew and having to keep a metre distance from other mums in case you still have nits and one starts waving at them from your fringe!!" And on the outside I'm like "well I'm pretty sure your hair still looks dam fine and you will rebuild that Zoo" I always thought I'd raise grateful kids, we'd do soup kitchens and donate our Christmas presents... But I get... "I don't wanna brush my hair!!! You are the worst mum ever!!!." So yesterday I tried something different... When she shot me daggers wanting me to acknowledge the sheer fucked up-ness of her situation (she couldn't find the undies with a tiger cub on them and was forced to wear the ones with a Frozen picture on them and Frozen to her is pretty much like Ed Hardy to the rest of the world. Over) I sat down with her and I tried a new approach, Empathy. After all when a friend comes over and tells me how much of a dick her husband is being I don't just tell her how amazing her marriage is- that would only make her feel worse, I do the right thing and tell her how much of a dick Bill is too so that we can both cackle and drink beer. So I told Billie-V, yeah well my life sucked too when I was a kid... She stared at me surprise.... "No really, my sister stole all my stuff, I was the slowest runner in the whole school, I only had dumb undies with pictures of mud on them and I kissed a boy playing kiss chasey and he told my friends that my kiss tasted like poo, seriously sucked." Billies magnificent little face lit up... I don't know if she was thriving on my misery or if she just liked feeling understood. Either way I had a buddy all day, she held my hand, smiled and gave no fucks when her Zoo was destroyed yet again.
