IPHONE 7 WARNING A pregnant woman has suffered second degree burns claiming she plugged her iPhone 7 into the charger while watching movies when she fell asleep. She woke up with pins and needles down her arm and went to the hospital where they told her the burns were from a 'foreign object'. (Pic: Melanie Tan Pelaez)
On this day, Australia reflects on a dark part of our history.
To the Aboriginal children who were stripped from their Mothers’ arms and forced to assimilate to a way of living that wasn’t their own, we acknowledge your loss and all that was taken from you.
To the Aboriginal Mothers and Fathers, Aunties and Uncles, Grandparents and Elders whose children were stolen, we acknowledge the heartache and loss that you endured.
On behalf of our staff and our million members, GetUp offers our deepest apologies.
Sorry for the denial of family and culture and the generations of racism you faced. Sorry for the dispossession of your land. Sorry for the incarceration, murder and rape of the First Peoples of this country.
Australia must understand and redress our wrongs, learn from our mistakes, and respect your connection to the land through listening to your stories and your dreaming.
We must embrace our difference.
We must give more than acknowledgement and recognition.
We must fight for justice and move toward a path of healing.
Today is World Mental Health Day, a great opportunity to start life-changing conversations, tackle stigma and discrimination and break down help-seeking barriers around mental health.
We're urging everyone to make your mental health a priority — not just today, but every day. Is there a commitment you can make, or a goal you can set to help you achieve or maintain good wellbeing? Think about the activities that contribute to you feeling positive, healthy and fulfilled and the things that add happiness and satisfaction to your life. To make a mental health promise, visit Mental Health Australia’s ‘promise wall’: https://1010.org.au/promise/add
It’s important to remember, ‘it’s okay to not be okay’. The best thing you can do is reach out. If you need advice or want to talk things through, you can contact our Support Service – available 24/7 for all Australians on 1300 22 4636 or online at www.beyondblue.org.au/getsupport To learn more about mental health or for tips on taking care of yourself and treatment and support options, visit: bb.org.au/2ddutIG
"I was listening to Scott Morrison on Monday speaking about what a burden migrant parents are. My migrant parents didn't have a word of English when they came to Australia (like so many). They raised 2 human rights lawyers with 8 degrees & an Order of Australia medal.
My parents slaved away on farms and in factories doing shit jobs most people wouldn't touch, for decades until their bodies couldn't take it anymore, like so many migrant parents. That was ok though....Sick of this racism. So damn sick of it.
The Turnbull government insults every one of you, whose parents or grandparents sacrificed everything for you and gave so much back to this country.
Unless you are Indigenous, we are all descendants of boat people on Aboriginal land."
Dear perfect Mummy brigade, don't bother coming after me, I just don't care that you're offended by me saying being a Stay at home Mum can sometimes suck balls. Because let's be real: it can. Spend your energy elsewhere ladies. Just so we're all clear: ZERO. FUCKS. GIVEN.
I am thrilled and deeply honoured to have been awarded a Companion of the Order of Australia. Unfortunately I won't be celebrating at a BBQ today - my work with the Global Partnership for Education is taking me to Malawi, where we are working on improving the quality of school education for some of the least fortunate children in the world. I hope you all have a wonderful day with family and friends and take the time to reflect on the things that unite us as Australians. We have so much to be thankful for. JG
Couples who flaunt their love life on Facebook and suddenly go quiet after they break up. You need to tell us exactly what happened. We invested a lot of time, likes and comments on your pictures and posts. We need closure as well
