“Yes, I’m the girl who swam for her life, then swam at the Olympics. Now I want to tell you another story. It’s about my other name, my other identity. You see, my name is refugee. At least, that’s what they call me.” In a compelling an open letter Olympian swimmer Yusra Mardini appeals for empathy and dignity. She is heading to the World Economic Forum this week to call on leaders to stand #WithRefugees #WEF17
First off I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year! There are big challenges ahead for working class people in 2017.
I appeared on Sky last week and no wonder the community has had enough of some politicians.
The Turnbull government is cutting the pensions of 330 000 retired Australians from 1 January and here we have three former politicians telling Australians who have worked hard all their lives to achieve a dignified retirement they should accept these cuts to their pensions.
It galls me that former politicians can lecture their fellow Australians that they need to sacrifice to bring the budget into balance while they enjoy the benefits of the old parliamentary pension that allows them to live in luxury.
People in the northern hemisphere still find it quite fascinating that in Australia we have it hot for Christmas. I live in South Australia and the predicted temperature for Christmas day this year is 40+ degrees...Whew! It's gonna be a scorcher, the warmest Christmas day for 70 years! So while Europe, America and some parts of Asia have a 'cool yule' we'll be around the pool, at the beach or at least somewhere in the shade trying to stay cool.
Did every single one of you ask for my book for Christmas?! The kind words flowing in on the visitors posts page are warming my blackened heart. I made something I love and am really proud of and it's being received in exactly the way I hoped it would. A lot of you seem to be walking away feeling less broken and alone, that is a fecking win for me as a writer. Please feel free to pass your copy on to another person you feel may need it, if you've read it, you'll know exactly what I mean by that! Thanks for reading my words you sexy jerks. X
GARDEN DIARY: 'Tis the season for heavenly hydrangeas, bursting into bloom across the summer months. With immense flower heads and old-world charm, hydrangeas put on a fabulous show in the garden. You'll spot bright blues, vibrant pinks, pure whites, lavender and rose — sometimes a mix of each blooming on the one plant. Decorators take note: they also make stunning cut flowers so, go on, snip a few stunners, place them in a vase and flaunt their magnificence indoors, too. Roger, gardening editor

"I understand how the media latch onto these things, but having reported it, it is important I think that the media step back. I think it’s important that the media don’t harass his family because there are other people involved here, not just the individual James Hird.” -Jeff Kennett
You can't get much more Australian than the "three wise ringers" and a Santa wearing running shoes. An #RFDS Christmas snap from 1995. Merry Christmas from everyone at the Flying Doctor. Stay safe and warm wishes!
