Pauline Hanson's One Nation is no more sophisticated today than it was in 1998. The only thing that's changed is Malcolm Turnbull's desperate desire to hang on to power, even at the cost of preferencing Pauline Hanson ahead of his Coalition partners The Nationals.
Here it is! When I got my first look at it I couldn't believe it was real. I've done stacks of missions with Rip Curl on #thesearch but this tops them all. Riding this unicorn was one of the greatest feelings I've experienced as a surfer. I've got friends and family hounding me about the location of this gem… but I'll never tell!
Once again, Nick Xenophon has jumped to the defence of young people, coming out swinging against The Turnbull Government's nasty cuts to income support – which include slashing support payments to people under 25.
Thanks to the Nick Xenophon Team, along with the ALP and the Greens, Turnbull's cruel agenda will be stopped dead in its tracks. Now maybe our PM can look at going after the 679 major corporations who paid no tax?
A bad thing happened to that women and her partner Peter Falconio.
She was blamed.
And we see it all the time, victims are always blamed, questioned, suspicious, or simply accused of handling the situation poorly.
A child drowns or chokes or dies in a car accident and the news comments are full of parents who would "never let that happens to their child"
A mothers teenager was raped and the public wants to know "what she was allowed out at that hour for?"
"Her husband cheats because she's a control freak"
"You can't call it rape when she sleeps with everyone she meets anyway"
We hang our already suffering fellow humans out to dry all for one reason.
Society cannot handle the simple fact that bad things happen to good people. It upsets our system, our "what goes around comes around" beliefs, our Christian values.. How can we believe in a universal justice if good people are randomly killed?
But above of all, it threatens our own safety.
So to keep ourselves safe, we source reasons as to why that couldn't happen to us "yes but I wouldn't wear the outfit she was wearing" and to keep our children safe we tell ourselves "the parents must have had something to do with the kidnapping"
"Her story doesn't add up"
We discredit victims to avoid empathising with them.
But the truth is that any of us could become the next victim and the sooner we accept this the sooner we can empathise all victims of all crimes.
I was 18 when Peter Falconio was murdered in our country and I kept my country safe by questioning Joanne, I scrutinised her emotional reaction and am now embarrassed and I have learnt a lot since then, but most of all I am sorry.
Victim blaming doesn't just accuse the innocent, it forces innocent people at their most vulnerable to defend themselves, creating a deeply more traumatic result on their lives.
