The Government wants to make it tougher to become an Australian citizen but it has not gone far enough. The questions on the Australian citizenship test are laughable and childish but most still end up having to take it multiple times. Other countries around the world require people to provide bank statements and have their own health insurance. We need to make sure new citizens can communicate in English and won't be a drain on our society. If they can't communicate how can you expect them to integrate?
An Australian citizenship is a privilege, not a right.
I have said this before but I think it is important. I'd like to see a minimum of 7 years before anyone can apply for Citizenship to Australia and I'd also like to see newcomers hold dual citizenship for 10 years after obtaining their Australian Citizenship. This would mean if they commit an offence that carries a sentence of 12 months or more, they risk being deported.
I spoke to the Prime Minister about this when I was first elected so it's good to see it's finally getting some real attention.
A lot of your suggestions for how we could improve the citizenship test were fantastic so keep them coming.
